You will say the wrong thing if you talk too much--so be sensible and watch what you say. - King Solomon
Dear friend, Our tongue is one of the smallest parts of our body. But it is difficult to control. A few wrong choices of words can put an end to a relationship, get someone fired from jobs, or could lead to physical fights with even close friends. James the brother of Jesus wrote, “People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison.“ It is much easier to tame wild animals than taming our tongue.
Why We Are Not Able To Control Our Tongue?
A white lie slips out of our mouth even before we realize the damage it’s going to cause. We might feel we are perfectly connected with God. But within a few minutes, we lose our temper unknowingly and words come out sharply out of our tongue.
Why we are not able to control our tongue? The tongue does not speak on its own. Jesus said, “For whatever is in your heart determines what you say.” The words we speak are the expression of our hearts. We do not constantly take stock of what gets accumulated in our hearts. The angry words are the output of an irritated heart. The comforting words are the output of a peaceful heart. The quality of words that flows from the tongue is a reflection of the quality of our hearts.
Jesus said, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks“ If evil words slip out of our tongue, it’s important we check the condition of our heart. The heart needs immediate healing so that the tongue can be softened instantly.
Some keep talking about others and interested in knowing about what others do. We tag them as gossipers. Others keep talking about themselves. We call them egotists. Both the gossipers and egotists reflect the status of their hearts than what they speak about themselves or the others. The heart of an egotist keeps thinking about themselves. The heart of the gossipers constantly engaged in comparative analysis about others. The secret of controlling our tongue is in our ability to control our hearts.
How To Control Our Heart?
When we guard our hearts against selfish and jealous thinking, we can control our tongue from boastful words. Our words can be as transparent as fresh stream water when our heart is at peace, secured, and satisfied.
Well, the next question would be, how do we control our hearts? The Bible says, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life“. Our hearts are controlled by what we fill our hearts with and what we ponder about. If we do not guard our hearts with at most vigilance, it will be filled up quickly by junk. For example, if we keep pondering about a past hurt, our hearts will be filled with negative thoughts about the person who caused the hurt. If we spend most of our time on unnecessary videos and books, our hearts will be enslaved and addicted to it. Some of us think there is nothing wrong with watching horror movies, especially during this Halloween season. Dear friend, with what are we filling our hearts with. Is it really worth it?
If we focus on the word of God and spend time in prayer, our hearts will be filled with peace, and the comforting words will flow from our hearts. Jesus said, “The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil;“.
